Umkumbe Safari Lodge is located in the Sabi Sand Wildtuin, considered by many to be the premier wildlife reserve in South Africa. Located on the banks of the seasonal Sand River, Umkumbe Safari Lodge is perfectly situated in one of the best Big Five game viewing destinations in Africa.

 

The reserve is home to the ‘Big Five’ (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo), as well as cheetah, wild dog and hundreds of other species of animals, birds and plants indigenous to the area. The phrase “Big Five” was coined by hunters of yesteryear – before the advent of the photographic safari – and refers to the animals considered the most dangerous to hunt.

The accommodation at Umkumbe Safari Lodge consists of ten suites, (seven superior and three standard) each includes a twin or king size bed draped with mosquito netting, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, an indoor seating area with luxurious soft furnishings and tea & coffee making facilities.  The en-suite facilities include a bath tub &outdoor shower, (superior suites only) or an indoor shower (standard suites), single vanity and separate w.c.

 

The suites have a veranda with seating and views of the Sand River or bushveld and waterhole.

There are interleading suites for families or groups travelling together.

The facilities on offer at Umkumbe Safari Lodge include a rim flow swimming pool facing the Sabi River with loungers on the sun deck. A guest lounge and snooker table.

 

Dining is conducted either outdoors under the shade of a traditional thatched roof or in the traditional boma under the stars. The lodge also has a guest gym should you wish to expel some energy.

Activities available to guests at Umkumbe Safari Lodge include exploring Sabi Sand Game Reserve in the experienced hands of highly qualified guides.  Twice daily game drives are conducted in the early morning and afternoon when it’s cooler and the predators are most active.

 

Try a bush walk, where your guide will point out the smaller things within the park such as animal spoor, unique plants and trees along with the numerous birds that call this reserve home.
