The 75 000 hectare, malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve is just a 4 hour drive from Johannesburg, and offers not only Big 5 viewing but the ‘Super Seven’ (wild dog & cheetah) are also seen on a regular basis along with the nocturnal brown hyena.

In addition, Makanyane also has 1 800 hectares of completely private game reserve to traverse.  Here you will be completely alone to enjoy any sighting.

The eight suites at Makanyane Safari Lodge overlook the Marico River and are luxurious and secluded on the edge of the riverside forest.  Each suite offers guests king size beds, air-conditioning, open fires and private viewing decks over the river.

 

The en-suite facilities include a free standing roll top bathtub and both indoor and outdoor showers.

Mankanyane also offers guests the opportunity to experience a night in the wild, sleeping out under the stars on their romantic Sleep Out deck.

The main lodge at Makanyane Safar Lodge is constructed from local stone and thatch, which allows it to bend into the bush perfectly.  The lodge boasts a large infinity edge swimming pool, a well-equipped gym, health & beauty treatment centre and a well-stocked wine cellar.

 

Breakfasts are usually shared with your ranger and other guests from your game drive, giving you the opportunity to discuss the mornings sightings.  Other meals are more private and intimate affairs and are taken in a variety of locations.

Activities

Take twice daily game drives with your experienced ranger and tracker in search of the ‘Super Seven’ (rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog).  All of which are seen on a regular basis at Madikwe along with both the spotted and more elusive brown hyena. 

 

It’s always recommended that you include a bush walk in your safari experience. Your ranger will share his immense knowledge of Madikwe and point out the smaller creatures of the reserve and explain their vital importance to keeping the eco-system healthy.
