Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Cape Town

Track leopards in a Big 5 nature reserve and enjoy laid back adventures in beautiful Cape Town.

  • Big 5 African Safari

  • Nature walks

  • Exquisite meals

  • Cape Town, Winelands, Robbin Island

  • Various activities available

Day 1   Fly from Johannesburg to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve

On arrival at OR Tambo International Airport you will be warmly welcomed by a member of the team, who will accompany you to the Federal Air hangar, where you will board a light aircraft flight to Sabi Sand Airstrip/Skukuza Airport. A vehicle will be waiting at the Airstrip and will take you to the lodge of your choice, where you will spend the next four nights.

Day 2   See spots in the Sabi Sand on a game drive

Enjoy twice-daily game drives that set off early in the morning or late in the afternoon (continuing after nightfall), in the company of expert safari guides and local trackers who will do their best to ensure that all your wishes are met.

Set out in an open 4×4 safari vehicle in the company of a ranger and tracker team, who will attempt to track your favourite animals. The Sabi Sand Game Reserve is well known for its leopard sightings and you may well spot one of these elusive cats resting after a successful night hunt. These usually shy and elusive cats have become accustomed to vehicles in the Sabi Sand and, unlike many other areas, where leopards are rarely glimpsed in daylight hours, sightings of these magnificent animals are not uncommon on day drives.

Day 3   Guided bush walk, game drives or pedal your way through the African bush

If you’re more comfortable on two wheels than four or even if you’re just looking for a more adventurous way to explore the rugged landscape of the Sabi Sand or Kruger National Park, the ideal answer is a mountain biking trail through the nature reserve. Available on Singita Boulders, Singita Ebony Lodge, Singita Lebombo or Singita Sweni Lodge; the bike rides set off just after breakfast, taking advantage of the cooler morning hours. This is true off-road wildlife viewing at its best.

Or take a guided nature walk as a magical alternative to a Big Five game drive in the Sabi Sand. This adventure makes full use of all your senses, allowing you a deeper connection with the African bush. Strap on your boots and feel the wild grasses crush beneath your boots as you follow your expert guide into the pristine, untamed landscapes of the region. Be mesmerised by the morning sunlight as it dances in dew drops delicately sprinkled on flourishing vegetation. Smell nature in its purest form and be enchanted by the chorus of wildlife surrounding you.

Nothing quite encapsulates the feeling of viewing wildlife on foot.  Encounter a variety of plains game from a safe distance and be enchanted by the reserve’s smaller inhabitants. This activity is also fantastic for keen birders and photographic enthusiasts. Your guides have a wealth of experience under their belts and will not only introduce you to the region’s fantastic fauna but its kaleidoscopic array of flora too. For any safari addict, this is definitely a bucket list adventure that will keep you coming back for more!

Day 4   Safari or visit one of the local rural communities

Continue you wildlife adventure with a safari or get a glimpse into real African life by visiting one of its rural communities. Choose to make a trip to one of the villages surrounding the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, which provides a glimpse into the challenges, hopes and dreams of this local community in a way that not only educates but also inspires.

(An additional cost may apply for transport to the nearest community project)

Day 5   Fly from Sabi Sand Game Reserve to Cape Town

After breakfast, you will be transferred by road to either Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport or Skukuza Airport. Board a scheduled SA Airlink flight to Cape Town International Airport. A member of the team will be waiting for you at Cape Town International Airport and you will be transferred by road to your hotel in Cape Town.

With Table Mountain, one of the most spiritual places on earth, at its heart and two oceans at its feet, the city of Cape Town, strategically situated at the south-western tip of Africa, has been famed for centuries as the Tavern of the Seas. Vibrant, cosmopolitan and an eclectic mix of old and new, this laid-back city is as much at home with its 17th century castle (whose cannons have never been fired in anger) as it is with its sleek skyscrapers and trendy malls. Home to South Africa’s first mosque, the country’s oldest wine farm, a 350-year-old garden and timelessly beautiful beaches, it’s no surprise the legendary Flying Dutchman and his spectral ship have spent eternity sailing the city’s shores.

Spend the next few days enjoying the extraordinary beauty of this scenic town and its surroundings with your choice of exciting activities (all at an additional cost).

Day 6   Encounter a giant of the deep on a shark cage dive or indulge yourself in the beautiful Cape Winelands

At an additional cost, you can choose to experience a shark cage dive begining at the quaint coastal village of Gaansbaai, in the Overberg district, off the coast of the Western Cape, two hours away from Cape Town. Savour the clean simplicity of the Great White House, where a decadent breakfast awaits divers, before heading off for a spine-tingling, adrenalin-filled, action-packed day. As safety is paramount, divers are given a brief introductory talk by a dedicated marine biologist, outlining welfare protocols, possible encounter scenarios, the general behaviour required from divers and expected behaviour from great whites. Next, head off to be fitted with a custom life-jacket, wet suit and waterproof jacket, which fully equip you for the journey ahead.

Sail out to the notorious Shark Alley, home to the largest population of great white sharks found in the world. The alley is a narrow channel of water that runs between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, boasting well over 50 000 Cape fur seals that entice the great whites to scan the depths and the surface in eager anticipation of easy prey. This adventure is ideal for thrill-seekers, shark aficionados and nature enthusiasts. For those who wish to remain on board, the great whites remain in clear view from the viewing deck, barely under the surface of the foamy sapphire water, often drumming their large noses against the boat’s exterior and even breaching during the summer season. The snout of the great white is its greatest feature, covered in sensory cells that can detect odours and blood from kilometres away. Divers are lowered into the water in large, secure steel cages, barely a metre (three feet) under the water. Look deep into the black eyes of the apex predator that reigns over the Western Cape coast, fully aware that its presence demands the utmost respect and reverence. Marvel at the heart-pounding experience of being face-to-face with a mighty great white shark, protected only by the steel rungs of a submerged cage.

Or indulge in a full day in the spectacular Cape Winelands, beginning with your first wine tasting on the way to Franschhoek, home to award-winning wine estates and known as South Africa’s gourmet capital. Drive past the Groot Drakenstein Prison, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated before his release and where he took his first steps as a free man. Visit the village of Franschhoek and see the Huguenot monument. Enjoy wine tasting in and around Franschhoek before stopping in the village for lunch. Continue your journey through the panoramic landscapes of the Helshoogte Mountain Pass, stopping for a third wine tasting in the area, time permitting. Your adventure ends with a leisurely stroll along the oak-lined streets of the university town of Stellenbosch, well known for its traditional Cape Dutch architecture.

Please note that these activities can be arranged at an additional cost.

Day 7   Visit the top of Table Mountain

Table Mountain offers a variety of hikes to suit every level of expertise. Platteklip Gorge offers the quickest way up, whereas the India Venster hike follows a less strenuous route up the face of the mountain, underneath the cable cars. The Lions Head hike, alongside Table Mountain, offers a steep climb with the assistance of chains or a more relaxed one without. No matter the route taken, every hike promises breathtaking bird’s-eye views over the city and coast. Be sure to stop and admire the unusual array of flora, some of which can be found nowhere else on earth. Choose to descend on foot, in cable cars or extend your venture up to Maclears Beacon, the highest point on the mountain.

Please note that this activity can be arranged at an additional cost.

Day 8   Journey to Robben Island the jailhouse of political prisioner Nelson Mandela

Set out on a ferry ride to Robben Island, best known as the site of a jailhouse for political prisoners, including former South African president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela. Your tour of the island is guided by a former political inmate, which means you will hear first-hand tales of its story of hope and hardship.

Or take a drive through the lovely scenery of the Cape Peninsula to beautiful Hout Bay.

Please note that these activities can be arranged at an additional cost.

After breakfast you will be transferred by road back to Cape Town International Airport, where your adventure with us will end.
